Day-Trading Scenarios for Apr 22, 2026

Uptrend continues. Buy pullbacks. First support/buy area is 49560, then 49490.

The cash Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) closed at 49,149.38, down 293.18 points (-0.59%). YM futures showed similar weakness, with the June contract (YMM6) trading in a range roughly 49,229–50,043 before settling near 49,339 (down from the prior day's settlement around 49,639).

The session started with early gains (the Dow was up as much as ~400 points intraday) but reversed as geopolitical uncertainty intensified. Markets erased gains amid stalled U.S.-Iran ceasefire extension talks—Vice President Vance's planned trip to Pakistan for negotiations was called off, and Iran signaled reluctance without U.S. concessions. Oil prices rebounded over 2% on renewed escalation fears (including reports of a U.S. seizure of an Iranian vessel and ongoing Hormuz-related tensions), pressuring risk assets.

The economic calendar is relatively light, with focus on consumer and housing data that could influence views on spending resilience and Fed policy expectations:

  • 8:30 AM ET: March Retail Sales (consensus ~+1.3% to +1.4% MoM; ex-autos/core ~+0.6% to +1.3%). Stronger figures would signal robust consumer demand; weakness could raise growth concerns.

  • 10:00 AM ET: February Business Inventories and March Pending Home Sales (expected flat to modest gains).

No major Fed speakers are scheduled, and earnings remain quiet. The dominant theme will likely remain U.S.-Iran geopolitics: President Trump announced an extension of the ceasefire (at Pakistan's request) to allow more time for a "unified proposal" from Iran, but uncertainty persists as the original truce nears expiration and talks remain stalled. Any positive diplomatic signals could support risk appetite and weigh on oil; renewed escalation risks (Hormuz tensions, naval actions) would boost energy/defensives while pressuring equities.

Shorter-term, expect volatility around the retail sales release—beats could spark a bounce toward 50,000, while misses or negative geopolitics might test the 49,100 zone. Watch for range expansion on news; lighter volume environments mean breakouts can accelerate. The structure favors buyers on dips near key supports unless geopolitical risks escalate sharply.

We start with a narrow range. This means the market, including the institutions, are confused as to the next move. This tells us to be patient, wait for the break, then get aboard. We are overbought.
