Day-Trading Scenarios for Jan 19, 2026

Updated: Jan 20

No reports today as we remember Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. King changed the world with his amazing ability to communicate and to bring all people together without violence or hatred.

I was parking cars near Carnegie Hall in New York at the end of February, 1968. By chance, I had the honor of retrieving his car. He personally told me, one month before he died, "A virus is more potent than a vandal."

He is probably trying to arise from his grave to condemn the rioters, criminals, and opportunists who are out for a quick looting of liquor stores.

The market closes at 1:00 PM Eastern, so the goal is 1 or 2 good trades--hopefully from the short side.

Today's intraday trend is down. 48,055 marks the boundary for a daily down trend. We should not hit that today, but if we close below 49212 we may hit that tomorrow.

The outlook is cautious and tilted bearish in the near term due to escalating geopolitical tensions. President Trump's threats of a 10% tariff on imports from eight European countries over opposition to U.S. control of Greenland have sparked risk aversion, pushing futures lower in early trading. This has led to safe-haven flows, with gold hitting fresh records and up 1.6%. U.S. cash markets are closed, which may keep volume thin, but futures remain active.

No major U.S. economic data is scheduled today, but global events could influence sentiment: China's Q4 GDP (expected ~4.5% YoY, the lowest since Q1 2023) and other data like industrial production and retail sales are due, potentially impacting risk appetite if they signal further slowdown.

There are no reports today.

We mark the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr.

Who preached nonviolent reform.

We start with a narrow range. This means the market, including the institutions, are confused as to the next move. This tells us to be patient, wait for the break, then get aboard. We are overbought.
