Day-Trading Scenarios for Jul 21, 2026

The daily chart has confirmed our downtrend. That means we take more short trades on good sell signals.

Yesterday's Recap (Monday, July 20)

The cash Dow closed down 307.16 points (-0.59%) at 51,839.26. It was a choppy session — the Dow was down all day, with just 3 of the top 10 index components in the green at the close. Chip stock momentum from the prior week's rebound faded, while oil prices rose again. The broader tape saw a rebound in tech being offset by renewed geopolitical worries, rising Treasury yields, and disappointment from blue-chip names. Earnings season is now in full swing — more than 86% of S&P 500 reporters have beaten estimates so far, but the market has been selling off many of them anyway ("beats aren't enough"), which is worth flagging since it's a classic "sell-the-news" dynamic that can trap breakout longs on earnings gaps.

Fundamental Drivers to Watch Intraday

  • Earnings season — heavy reporting cadence this week; watch for the sell-the-news pattern noted above on names that beat but still get faded

  • Middle East / Iran — ongoing tensions and oil-price sensitivity remain a headline-risk wildcard that can spike volatility on any escalation/de-escalation news

  • Tariffs on Canada — a fresh trade-policy input this morning, worth monitoring for sector-specific reaction (industrials, autos)

  • Yields — rising Treasury yields were cited as a drag Monday; a move in the 10-year this morning could pressure the reopen higher

  • VIX compression — the drop toward 17.85 suggests some of Monday's fear has drained out, which historically supports continuation of overnight strength unless a headline reverses sentiment

Day-Trading Scenarios for Aug 6, 2026

We start with a narrow range. This means the market, including the institutions, are confused as to the next move. This tells us to be patient, wait for the break, then get aboard. We are overbought.
