End of the month window dressing. Funds tend to dump losers and buy winners.
Market trying to break resistance today. Two-way trading.
The cash Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 52,208.06, up +613.92 points (+1.19%). The S&P 500 rose ~1.7% to 7,437.63 and the Nasdaq Composite surged ~2.8% to 25,122.18, snapping a six-day losing streak. Chip and semiconductor stocks led (PHLX Semiconductor Index +~8%), with strength in names like Micron, Applied Materials, and Intel. Microsoft posted a strong session (one of its best in nearly two decades) after solid earnings that reassured investors on AI spending returns, while Meta continued to lag after its miss.
This bounce followed Wednesday’s sharp selloff tied to the Fed’s decision (and tone). The FOMC held the federal funds rate steady at 3.50%–3.75% (fifth consecutive hold) but with three dissents favoring a 25 bp hike, keeping a hawkish lean in the air amid elevated inflation and solid economic activity. Long-term Treasury yields stayed near recent highs.
After the close on Thursday, Apple and Amazon reported. Amazon beat on revenue/cloud growth and raised 2026 capex guidance (to ~$220B, citing higher memory costs), with shares jumping >10% in extended trading. Apple also beat on EPS but faced supply-constraint commentary. These results added overnight fuel.
