Day-Trading Scenarios for Oct 16, 2026
Daily trend turned up.
The market is a bit overbought to begin. We need a good-sized pullback to buy again.
YM Morning Report — Friday, October 16, 2026
Prior Session Recap (Thursday, Oct 15)
YM opened the day session at 52060 and ran early sell stops, printing the session low of 51922 at 9:46 ET. That was the low of the day. From there the market climbed steadily, reaching 52313 by 11:00, holding sideways through lunch, and pushing to a high of 52503 at 3:23 ET before settling at 52430, a gain of roughly 370 points from the open. The opening 30-minute range was 262 points.
The cash Dow rose 1.08% to 52,177.69, beating the S&P 500 (+0.33%) and Nasdaq (+0.08%). Leadership came from health care, materials and consumer discretionary, while technology and energy lagged.
Overnight, YM extended to 52657 at 6:38 ET. It has since given back the entire gain and is trading near 52427, right on Thursday’s settle.
Fundamental Picture
Thursday’s tape was a rotation story. A semiconductor selloff in Taiwan Semi, Micron and Nvidia pushed money out of tech and into Treasuries and value names. That rotation explains why the Dow beat the Nasdaq by a full point. September PPI came in sharply hot, up 6.3% year over year against 5.3% expected, with core PPI up 5%. Even so, the 10-year yield fell about 14 basis points to roughly 5.05% on the flight into bonds. The 30-year has now pulled back from 5.73%, its highest level since 2002. Fed funds futures price about an 85% chance the Fed holds steady at its October meeting.
Today is monthly options expiration, so pin-and-whip action around round numbers is likely. Industrial production and capacity utilization come out at 9:15 ET, fifteen minutes before the open. Energy remains a wildcard: WTI is near $97 after Treasury Secretary Bessent signaled more economic pressure on Iran, where the naval blockade has cut seaborne crude exports to zero. In earnings, Alcoa beat on EPS, while J.B. Hunt and Interactive Brokers missed slightly. With yields easing and rotation favoring Dow components, the backdrop leans constructive for YM. Fading the premarket gains suggests the market wants a test lower first.

Other key references: overnight high 52657, overnight low 52380, prior day high 52503.
60-minute chart: The 5 SMA (≈52509) is still above the 20 SMA (≈52468), so the higher-timeframe trend remains up. Price is now below both averages, though, and the 5 is rolling over toward the 20. If price holds below about 52470 for another hour or two, a bearish cross is possible.
15-minute chart: The 5 SMA (≈52426) crossed below the 20 SMA (≈52538) around 7:30 ET. Short-term trend is down, a correction inside the larger uptrend.
Bias: Price is about 190 points above the pivot and the 60-minute trend is up, so the primary bias is long on pullbacks. The 15-minute downtrend suggests the market may first run sell stops toward the pivot before resuming higher.
Trade Plan
With-trend #1, pivot stop-run long. If the open drives lower into the 52240–52260 pivot zone, look to buy as the 1-minute chart turns up.
Stop: 52195 (inside the 50-point limit)
Target 1: 52480, one Swing Magnitude Factor off the low
Target 2: 52657, the overnight high
With-trend #2, 15-minute reclaim long. If a 15-minute bar closes above the 20 SMA (≈52540), buy the first pullback to the 52500–52510 area, which is the prior day high and the 60-minute 5 SMA.
Stop: 52455
Target 1: 52657
Target 2: 52694 (R1)
Counter-trend, R1 fade short. If price rallies into the 52657–52694 zone (overnight high and R1), short when the 1-minute stochastic is above 80 and turning down on the 27-minute cycle.
Entry: about 52685
Stop: 52735
Target 1: 52540
Target 2: 52440
Swing Magnitude Factor Forecast (9:30–10:00 ET range)
Forecast: 240 points
Over the last 25 sessions the opening 30-minute range has a median of 239 points, and the last 10 sessions have a median of 245. Several factors roughly cancel out:
The overnight range is lighter than usual (270 vs. a 358 average), which argues for a slightly smaller open.
Options expiration and the 9:15 industrial production release argue against a quiet one.
Thursday’s opening range was 262.
Using the stop-run model, if the open first runs stops lower toward the pivot area, a full 240-point rotation from that low points back toward 52480–52500.
