Prior Session Recap (Friday, Oct 16)

YM gapped up to open at 52567. It ran in the first 30 minutes to a session high of 52823 at 9:56 ET, a 289-point opening range. That high held for the rest of the day. From there sellers took over and pushed prices lower each hour: 52634 at 11:00, 52295 at 1:00 and 52103 at 3:00. The session low of 52065 came at 2:37 ET, and YM settled near 52208. The full range was 758 points, one of the widest of the month.

The cash Dow fell 0.34% to 52,002.41. The S&P 500 lost 1.09% and the Nasdaq dropped 2.14%. Both had their worst week since June.

Sunday night YM opened at 52034, rallied to 52508 by 11:37 pm, and then sold off steadily through Europe. It is now 52130, below Friday’s settle.

Fundamental Picture

Friday was a semiconductor and AI liquidation. Investors pulled back on chip names over doubts that heavy AI spending will pay off: Micron fell 5.6% and Intel 5.8%. The Dow held up better than the other indexes because of its lighter tech weighting, which continued last week’s rotation into value. This morning the flows are reversing. Nasdaq futures are bouncing and Intel is up about 4% premarket on a JPMorgan upgrade, while YM is slipping. When money rotates back into tech, the Dow has been the index that gets sold to pay for it.

On the macro side, WTI crude has pulled back to about $100.50 from a five-month high after Washington waived some Russia sanctions. Iran’s offer of a seven-day ceasefire and a phased reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is still on the table, but it depends on the U.S. lifting the naval blockade, and attacks on shipping continued last week. Headlines on either issue could move the market quickly. This is a heavy earnings week: SpaceX reports Tuesday after the close, Tesla on Wednesday, and Meta, IBM, Netflix, GM and AT&T during the week. Expect traders to stay cautious ahead of those reports, with rallies sold until the tech picture settles.

60-minute chart: The 5 SMA (≈52169) crossed below the 20 SMA (≈52294) during the European session. Trend is down.

15-minute chart: The 5 SMA (≈52102) is below the 20 SMA (≈52203), and both are falling. Trend is down.

Bias: Both timeframes point down, and price is about 235 points below the pivot. Primary bias is short on rallies. Using the stop-run model, the open may first push up through overhead buy stops toward the 52230–52280 area, where the 15-minute 20 SMA and the 4 am breakdown level sit, before the downtrend resumes. The 52034–52065 double floor is the line to watch. A clean break below it opens the way to S1.

Trade Plan

All stops are within the 50-point limit.

With-trend #1: stop-run short. Short a pop into the 52230–52250 zone when the 1-minute stochastic is above 80 and turning down.

  • Entry: 52240

  • Stop: 52290

  • Target 1: 52065 (Friday low)

  • Target 2: 51975 (one full Swing Magnitude Factor off the extreme)

With-trend #2: breakdown retest short. If YM breaks below 52034, wait for the first retest of the 52050–52065 area from underneath, then short.

  • Entry: 52055

  • Stop: 52105

  • Target 1: 51907 (S1)

  • Target 2: 51810

Counter-trend: S1 bounce long. If the market reaches S1 (51907) after a full swing down and the 1-minute stochastic is below 20 and turning up, buy for the typical ~70-point counter-trend rally.

  • Entry: 51910

  • Stop: 51860

  • Target 1: 51980

  • Target 2: 52030

Swing Magnitude Factor Forecast (9:30–10:00 ET range)

Forecast: 265 points

Over the past six weeks the opening 30-minute range has a median of 240 points. The last ten sessions average 270, and Friday’s was 289. This morning’s pre-open range is 456 points against a 355 average, which points to a larger open, since a busy overnight session has tended to lead to a wider opening range. Monday openings in this sample have ranged widely, from 87 to 337 points.

Using the measured-move model, if the opening stop-run reaches about 52240, a full 265-point swing down from that high projects to about 51975. That is below Friday’s low and the Sunday open, and just above S1.
