Day-Trading Scenarios for Oct 20, 2026
YM Morning Report — Tuesday, October 20, 2026
Prior Session Recap (Monday, Oct 19)
YM opened the week at the session low of 52034 on Sunday evening and rallied to the session high of 52508 by 11:37 pm. It then sold off through London and opened the day session at 52129. The open ran sell stops down to 52063 at 9:51 ET, just under Friday’s low. From there the market rallied 286 points to 52349 at 11:29, stalling just below Monday’s pivot. The afternoon was quiet, holding between 52200 and 52260, and YM settled at 52182.
The cash Dow slipped 0.07% to 51,966.03, while the S&P 500 rose 0.41% and the Nasdaq 1.11% as chip stocks rebounded. The VIX fell 8% to 18.4.
Overnight, YM rallied into the London open to 52413 at 3:05 ET and then fell 341 points to 52072 at 8:38. It is now at 52178, right on Monday’s settle.
Fundamental Picture
Monday’s money flowed back into tech, and the Dow, last week’s safe haven, was the index that lagged. This morning that tech rebound is stalling. Elice, a South Korean data-center operator, fell 32% in its Seoul debut, and chip stocks are under pressure again. Nasdaq futures were down about 0.6% early, while Dow futures held near unchanged. General Motors helped industrial sentiment with a beat, a tighter outlook and a $20 billion buyback. When the AI trade wobbles, the Dow has been the relative winner, which limits downside in YM even when the broader tape is heavy.
The macro backdrop is still tight. The 10-year yield is about 5.13%. Brent crude is near $109 and WTI near $98, with the Strait of Hormuz situation unresolved. Housing data is on today’s calendar, and Asian and European markets traded lower. Earnings ramp up after today’s close with Netflix and United Airlines, then Tesla and Meta on Wednesday. Expect traders to stay defensive ahead of those reports, with rallies in YM likely capped until the tech picture clears.

60-minute chart: The 5 SMA (≈52229) has just crossed below the 20 SMA (≈52263). Trend has turned down.
15-minute chart: The 5 SMA (≈52171) is below the 20 SMA (≈52255). Trend is down.
Bias: Both timeframes are aligned down and price is 63 points below the pivot, so the primary bias is short on rallies. The margin is thin, though: price is close to the pivot, and Monday afternoon was range-bound. Under the stop-run model, the open may push up through buy stops into the 52240–52265 zone before the downtrend resumes. That zone is where the pivot and both 20 SMAs sit. The 52034–52072 shelf below is the line that decides the day.
Trade Plan
Stops stay within 50 points. Management: once a trade is 50 points in profit, move the stop to breakeven, then trail it.
With-trend #1: stop-run short at the pivot cluster. Short a pop into 52250–52265 when the 1-minute stochastic is above 80 and turning down.
Entry: 52255
Stop: 52305
Target 1: 52072 (overnight low)
Target 2: 52015 (one full Swing Magnitude Factor off the extreme)
With-trend #2: breakdown retest short. If YM breaks below 52034, wait for the first retest of 52040–52055 from underneath, then short.
Entry: 52050
Stop: 52100
Target 1: 51974 (S1)
Target 2: 51890
Counter-trend: London profit-taking long. If the open runs sell stops under the 52063–52072 lows and then quickly recovers back above them, buy the reclaim. This is the setup London’s profit-taking created yesterday.
Entry: 52075
Stop: 52025
Target 1: 52241 (pivot)
Target 2: 52315 (one full SMF off the low)
Swing Magnitude Factor Forecast (9:30–10:00 ET range)
Forecast: 240 points
The normal opening range over the last 10 sessions is 228 points. Pre-open activity this morning is running at 127% of normal, which points to an opening range a little above normal. London’s swing this morning was 341 points down, from 52413 to 52072.
Measured-move targets:
If the opening stop-run peaks near 52255, one full 240-point swing down points to about 52015. That is just below the 52034–52072 shelf, with S1 at 51974 not far beneath.
If the shelf holds and sell stops get run first, a full swing up from about 52070 reaches 52310, back toward the London range.
