YM Morning Report — Thursday, October 22, 2026

Prior Session Recap (Wednesday, Oct 21)

YM opened the day session at 52975, near the overnight highs. The open flushed sell stops right away: price dropped 328 points in five minutes to 52651 at 9:35 and made the session low of 52602 at 10:07 ET. From there the uptrend resumed. YM reached 52830 by 11:30 and 52998 by 2:00, then rallied into the close to settle at 53059. After the close, as the Tesla and Meta earnings landed, YM briefly spiked to the session high of 53168 at 4:23 pm.

The cash Dow gained 0.69% to 52,856.09, a one-month high, helped by Goldman Sachs (+2.25%). The S&P 500 rose 0.58% and the Nasdaq 1.05% as AI hardware names rallied.

Overnight the tone reversed. YM slid from 53085 to the London low of 52644 at 6:01 ET and is now at 52757, about 300 points below the settle.

Fundamental Picture

The earnings that were supposed to confirm the AI rally have disappointed. Tesla beat on earnings per share but is down about 5% premarket after cutting its capex guidance and lowering its long-term vehicle target. Meta beat but is lower after raising its 2026 capex outlook to $135–145 billion and taking a $9.9 billion legal charge. Most important for YM, IBM is down about 5.7%. It beat estimates, but its gross margin missed and the CEO said corporate customers are questioning the returns on AI spending. Because IBM is one of the highest-priced Dow components, its drop has an outsized effect on the price-weighted Dow. Lam Research is down 8%, and chip stocks are giving back Wednesday’s gains. There are bright spots: Lockheed Martin raised its guidance and CSX beat.

Geopolitics is adding pressure. Brent crude topped $111, its highest since May, after the New York Times reported that the U.S. and Israel are preparing renewed strikes on Iran after the November 3 midterms. Saudi Arabia also reported attacks on the Dammam airport and an Aramco oil field. Futures are lower across the board: Dow futures about −0.6%, S&P about −0.9% and Nasdaq about −1.6%. The VIX is back near 18. The 10-year yield eased to about 5.04% as money moved into Treasuries for safety. Expect rallies to be sold today while oil stays elevated and the AI-spending debate plays out.

Reference Price

60-minute 20 SMA ≈52861

London open high 52842

London low 52644

Wednesday low 52602

60-minute chart: The 5 SMA (≈52738) is below the 20 SMA (≈52861). Trend is down.

15-minute chart: The 5 SMA (≈52774) is slightly above the 20 SMA (≈52733). This is a short-term pre-open bounce inside the larger downtrend, not a trend change.

Bias: Price is 186 points below the pivot and the hourly trend is down, so the primary bias is short on rallies. London traders are short from 52842 with about 200 points of profit. As they cover near the NY open and the opening stop-run plays out, a push up into the 52840–52860 zone is likely before the downtrend resumes. That zone holds London’s starting price and the 60-minute 20 SMA. The 52602–52644 shelf below is the key support. A break below it opens the way to S2.

Trade Plan

Stops stay within 50 points. Management: once a trade is 50 points in profit, move the stop to breakeven, then trail it.

With-trend #1: London profit-taking short. Short a pop into 52840–52860 when the 1-minute stochastic is above 80 and turning down.

Entry: 52850

Stop: 52900

Target 1: 52718 (S1)

Target 2: 52620 (one full Swing Magnitude Factor off the high)

With-trend #2: breakdown retest short. If YM breaks below Wednesday’s low of 52602, short the first retest of 52605–52615 from underneath.

Entry: 52610

Stop: 52660

Target 1: 52500

Target 2: 52377 (S2)

Counter-trend: shelf reclaim long. If the open flushes into 52602–52644 and quickly recovers back above it, buy the reclaim. Wednesday’s open had this same setup in reverse.

Entry: 52615

Stop: 52565

Target 1: 52718 (S1)

Target 2: 52845 (one full SMF off the low, back to London’s starting price)

Swing Magnitude Factor Forecast (9:30–10:00 ET range)

Forecast: 230 points

The normal opening range over the last 10 sessions has widened to 276 points. This morning’s pre-open trading is unusually quiet, though, running at only 46% of normal, so the forecast comes in below normal. London’s swing was 198 points down, from 52842 to 52644.

Measured-move targets:

If the opening stop-run peaks near 52850, one full 230-point swing down projects to 52620. That sits right on the 52602–52644 shelf, so the shelf is where to take profits on shorts.

If the shelf holds and sell stops get run first, a full swing up from about 52615 reaches 52845, back to London’s starting price.
