Day-Trading Scenarios for Oct 23, 2026
YM Morning Report — Friday, October 23, 2026
Prior Session Recap (Thursday, Oct 22)
YM made its session low of 52644 at 6:01 am ET in the overnight session and opened the day session at 52820. After a quick dip to 52762 in the first minute, the market rallied to 53022 by 9:57, a 260-point opening range. A pullback to 52703 at 10:38 held. Buyers then pushed YM to the session high of 53130 at 12:30 ET. The afternoon held between 52930 and 53030, and YM settled at 53068.
The cash indexes split sharply:
Index Close Change
Dow 52,867.98 +11.89 (flat)
S&P 500 7,663.43 −1.2% (worst day since July)
Nasdaq 26,008.86 −2.6%
Under the surface, most stocks rose. The Dow’s lighter tech weighting kept it steady while the AI names were hammered.
Overnight, YM ticked up to 53166 early in the evening, then sold off steadily through Asia and London to 52694 at 7:10 ET. It is now at 52740, more than 300 points below the settle.
Fundamental Picture
Thursday was an AI liquidation. Meta fell more than 7% after raising its AI spending forecast and announcing plans to issue new shares to fund it. AMD dropped 8% and Nvidia 4.4%, as worries grew that high interest rates could choke the AI buildout. Money moved into Treasuries, pushing the 10-year yield down to about 4.95%. This morning the pattern is flipping: chip stocks are bouncing modestly while Dow futures lead the decline at about −0.6%, with the Nasdaq nearly flat. When the rotation reverses, the blue chips give back their relative gains. American Express, a Dow component, reports before the bell and could move YM at the open.
Oil is the bigger worry. Brent is near $114 and WTI above $101 after reports that the U.S. and Israel are weighing new strikes on Iran after the November midterms, and Tehran has vowed to retaliate against economic and civilian infrastructure. The VIX is up to about 19.7. Two data releases fall inside the opening 30 minutes: the S&P Global flash PMIs at 9:45 ET and the final University of Michigan sentiment and inflation expectations at 10:00 ET. Expect a choppy, two-sided open and a defensive tone into the weekend with geopolitical risk this high.

Key references
Reference Price
London open high 52946 (right on the pivot)
15-minute 20 SMA ≈52802
Overnight low 52694
Thursday low 52644
60-minute chart: The 5 SMA (≈52788) is well below the 20 SMA (≈52954). Trend is down.
15-minute chart: The 5 SMA (≈52748) is below the 20 SMA (≈52802). Trend is down.
Bias: Both timeframes are aligned down and price is about 200 points below the pivot, just under S1. The primary bias is short on rallies. London traders are short from 52946 with 250 points of profit, and their covering near the NY open is likely to fuel the opening stop-run. The first resistance is 52800–52815, where the 15-minute 20 SMA sits. A deeper squeeze would run into 52940–52950, where London’s starting price lines up exactly with the daily pivot. The 52644–52694 shelf is the support to watch. A break below it opens the way to S2 at 52461.
Trade Plan
Stops stay within 50 points. Management: once a trade is 50 points in profit, move the stop to breakeven, then trail it.
With-trend #1: 15-minute 20 SMA short. Short a pop into 52800–52815 when the 1-minute stochastic is above 80 and turning down.
Entry: 52810
Stop: 52860
Target 1: 52694 (overnight low)
Target 2: 52530 (one full Swing Magnitude Factor off the high)
With-trend #2: pivot / London-start short. If the opening squeeze stops out trade #1 and carries into 52940–52950, re-short there. This is the strongest resistance on the chart.
Entry: 52940
Stop: 52990
Target 1: 52810
Target 2: 52660 (one full SMF off the high)
Counter-trend: shelf reclaim long. If the open flushes into 52644–52694 and quickly recovers back above it, buy the reclaim.
Entry: 52655
Stop: 52605
Target 1: 52764 (S1)
Target 2: 52935 (one full SMF off the low, back to the pivot)
Swing Magnitude Factor Forecast (9:30–10:00 ET range)
Forecast: 280 points
The normal opening range over the last 10 sessions is 276 points. Pre-open activity is running at 110% of normal. The 9:45 PMI release and the 10:00 sentiment data both fall inside the window, which favors a full-sized range today. London’s swing was 252 points down, from 52946 to 52694.
Measured-move targets:
If the opening stop-run peaks near 52810, one full 280-point swing down projects to 52530.
If the squeeze reaches the pivot first, a full swing down from about 52945 projects to 52665, back on the shelf.
